We lost our first fish. It was really sad. I was hated watching her suffer, oh yes, this was one of our balas, Cordy. She quit eating and it was just painful. We did everything we could think of to help her, but nothing worked. I'm just so sad about it. You get these pets and fall in love with them and its just heart breaking.
On other matters, I'm now suffering from the same fate of my husband. I cannot think of anything of substance to share. I hope y'all bear with me. :P I have alot on my mind and none of it seems to come out the way I want it to. If you looked at my box here you would see a ton of drafts. Anyway, I finally have a day off tomorrow with my husband! This is our first day off together in a long time! We have different things to do, but later that night we are going to meet with Lydia and Drew for a night on the town! Anyway, I hope all of you are having a good week!
Blessings!

Sorry about your fish. Have a good night with Lydia and Drew, though.
I'm sorry to hear about your fish. It's really sad when a fish dies.
I hope you had a good time with Drew and Lydia.
That was me. The stupid ENTER key was right next to the shift key.
Lydia and I both had a great time. I hope we can get together again sometime soon.
And I'm sorry about Cordy. Brings back memories of episode 100 of Angel, "You're Welcome," very sad time. Did she pass on any visions to Angelus about how to take out the Circle of the Black Thorn?
Sarah-
thanks! It is sad. I keep thinking about her. Right now though I'm like serously skiddish with them. :P I think I might be an over protective mom at this point. :P :(
We had a great time with Lydia and Drew. Maybe next go we can all get together. Not sure when Blake and I will have another day off together, but when we do we will see what plans we can put together. :)
Blessings!
Drew-
We had a great time as well. I was glad that we had a wonderful evening together! Although now I'm regreting not writting down what that sign said. I can't remember the full statement. LOL Oh, well.
You know, Blake and I need to talk to Angelous about that. She was in that tank at the end. How ironic is that? I guess we will have to see if Angelous starts acting weird and out of character. I guess we will really know if he has a shiny ball and stops time around us. ;)

Do you know what made her sick? Is it contagious? Maybe I can help?

I won't have any time until September or October, so there's no rush. ;) Maybe then I can drive us four Torontonians out to Guelph, in my stylish orange Cavalier (not a picture of my car). That way you guys won't have to commute all the way to Toronto.
We just lost our beloved Beta Fish, the most beautiful blue fish full of life on his second birthday. He was a cross country traveller, and he had his own coffee pot that he travelled in with us. He stayed in hotels, it was fun. But no more. Poor Billy the Beta Fish is gone. Billy the Beta Fish will no longer be blowing happy bubbles.

she quit eating, would not eat a thing. her colour was great. all the other fish seem fine. eating and doing great. The guy at Big Al's said it may have just been the stress of being moved, because balas can be so nervous. any ideas from you? It was so sad. It still bothers me. *sigh*

I'm all about that! :) either way would love to spend time with y'all. :)

aaawwww...I'm so sorry. :(
we have a betta as well. he is so cute. he is actually our "first born" ;) he is our very specail lil' guy. Angelus The Betta Kennedy sends his love as well. :)
I don't have any experience with balas, so my fish experience doesn't directly apply to your situation. Since all the other fish seem fine, I would vote with the guy from Big Al's. Have you tested your water, just in case?
I have never been able to successfully treat a fish that stopped eating and became sluggish. That's what happened when my first betta, Mr. Fish, died. I think that may have been a bacterial infection and I treated the whole tank with Maracyn 2. Mr. Fish died (and he was fairly old), but all the other fish in the tank (guppies) survived. I still miss Mr. Fish sometimes, and he died last summer.
My other experience with fish stopping eating and getting sluggish and dying is with rosy red minnows. They are sold as feeder fish, and there is almost no information on how to keep them.
On my first attempt with them, I got six and quarantined them in a cycled tank. They developed ich, so I gradually added salt to the water to the therapeutic level. The ich seemed to be cured in a week or two, but then a fish stopped eating, got sluggish, and died, so I continued to maintain the level of salt. Soon another fish stopped eating, got sluggish, and died, so I continued to maintain the level of salt. The fish continued dying one by one, until they were all dead.
Eventually, I decided to have another try with the rosy red minnows. This time I decided to premptively treat them with Maracyn 2 and salt, before any symptoms appeared. (Since they are feeder fish, they are not very healthy in the pet store and I thought they might already have diseases when I get them.) I started with 10 fish, and they started off well, but soon they started dying off one by one, just like the earlier batch. Eventually, I got the idea that maybe they were sensitive to the salt in the water, so I did a bunch of water changes to remove the salt. Two of them survived, and are still alive today, almost a year later. :) I hadn't suspected the salt, because my goldfish, bettas, and guppies were all happy with some salt in their water for prolonged periods of time.
(On an unrelated note, I have had much success treating my goldfish for finrot with Maracyn 2, although I have found that the normal five day treatment doesn't clear it up, and I have to treat for 10 days.)
well, now our betta is sick. I swear are we fish killers? I guess I shouldn't say that since he isn't gone yet. just so frusterating. :( its our fault. the nitrate and ammonia got too high. Blake noticed it last night when he saw the tetras floating at the bottom and relized what happened. I skirted home and slowly did a 100% water change. right now it isn't looking good. don't know what we are going to do. I'm so mad! one of the tetras though did live and seems fine. go figure. I could have caredless about the tetra. anyway, hopefully our sweet Angelus well get better, you never know.
That really sucks about your water quality. When I got my first fish, Mr. Fish (a betta), he was exposed to high ammonia, before I figured out what I was doing. He survived, with frequent partial water changes (although I had to treat him for a bacterial and fungal infection).
Here's a good page on the nitrogen cycle. It sounds like your new tank hasn't cycled yet. :( Maybe you can find someone in Guelph who can give you some gravel and/or filter media from an established (cycled) tank, to speed up your cycle. You could try going to the PN Aquaria forums to find someone in Guelph who can help you out. I'm "ichthus_lover" on there, but I haven't been around in a really long time. The people on PN Aquaria are all really nice (or at least they used to be the last time I was on there).
Sarah:
The tank was fully cycled, temperature was fine, pH was fine, etc. but our pleco has turned out to be a very, very messy fish and totally polluted the water in about 3 days with his waste. Apparently, the algae wafers we had given him didn't agree with his digestive tract and he put out strings of feces about 14" long, and they were tangled (and hidden) everywhere. By the time we noticed the damage (dead neon tetras), reacted and did our water change, our Angelus had massive ammonia or nitrite poisoning. The poor little guy seemed to recover a bit but died this evening.
I loved Angelus, and will probably miss him more than Julie will. He has had a couple of health issues ever since we got him, and it really hurts to lose him.
